Windows runs programs in user mode by default. If you want to run programs in administrative mode, you will need to specify that explicitly in Windows 10. Running programs in Windows 10 as an administrator is easy. In this article, we discuss a few ways to run programs in administrative mode in Windows 10. You may use the method which is convenient for you.

So many admin access keys
So many admin access keys

Each method mentioned below will have its own advantages and disadvantages depending upon the situation you are in. For example, for a quick workaround, you may want to use a keyboard shortcut while at other times you may need a more permanent method of opening an app in admin mode. We will also discuss a method especially useful for power users and system administrators in which we can specify admin credentials one time and use applications without asking for password again and again. Let’s start.

4 Ways to run programs in administrative mode in Windows 10

The simplest way to run a program in administrative mode is to right-click the program and select “Run as administrator”. If the current user is not an administrator, Windows will as for the administrator username and password. Let’s check out what other options do we have to run programs in administrative mode.

Always run a specific program as administrator

To always run a specific program as administrator, we will create its shortcut on the Desktop and make changes to the shortcut. Please follow the instructions below:

  1. From Start Menu, find your desired program. Right-click and select Open File Location.

Open file location from start menu
Open file location from start menu
  2. Right-click the program and go to Properties –> Shortcut.
  3. Go to Advanced.
  4. Check Run as Administrator checkbox.

Run as administrator option for program
Run as administrator option for program

Now when you run the program from Start Menu, it will run in administrative mode.

Keyboard shortcut to run a program in administrative mode

You can also run a program in administrator mode directly from Start Menu. Just find the program in Start Menu, press Ctrl + Shift keyboard keys and click on the program. This will open the program as an administrator. But you will always need to press Ctrl + Shift keys while opening the programs in admin mode.

Always run all programs as administrator

By not running programs as an administrator, Windows keeps the system secure by not allowing viruses and malware take admin access without user acknowledgement. But if you want to turn off this feature and always run all programs as administrator, please follow the steps below. This security feature is called User Access Control. Disabling UAC will also disable asking for administrative privileges.

  1. Go to Start Menu search and search for “uac”. Select “Change User Account Control Settings”.

Finding UAC from Start Menu search
Finding UAC from Start Menu search
  2. Move the slider to the bottom to turn off User Account Control.

    Turning off UAC
    Turning off UAC
  3. After applying this, you will not be asked anything and all programs will run in administrative mode.

Use the Run dialog box to run applications with administrative privileges

There are some system programs which we start directly from Run dialog. For example, I always open command prompt or PowerShell using Run –> cmd.

If you are using Windows 10 Version 1803, the good news is that you will be able to open the programs in administrative mode directly from the Run dialog.

Just enter the command and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter. This will trigger Run dialog box to run applications with admin privileges.

Run programs as administrator using RunAs Tool

Windows built-in RunAs command allows a user to launch programs with different user credentials than the now logged in user. To use RunAs command, press Shift key and right-click on the program shortcut to show Run As Different User in the context menu.

Run as different user context menu
Run as different user context menu

But you have to repeat this step every time you launch that specific program. If you want to always run a program as a specific user then RunAsTool is for you.

RunAsTool is a portable app in which you can save admin user credentials and then app can automatically run programs listed in the app as the specific user all the time.

This is especially useful for system administrators who want to give administrative rights to standard users only for specific programs and applications.

  1. Download RunAsTool
  2. Unzip it in a folder
  3. Run RunAsTool.exe or RunAsToolx64.exe depending upon your system architecture.
  4. First time, it will ask you for administrator user credentials

    Select Admin in RunAsTool
    Select Admin in RunAsTool
  5. After giving the administrator password, you can drag and drop the applications you want to run as administrator.

    Adding programs to RunAsTool
    Adding programs to RunAsTool
  6. Now you can double-click any application from within RunAsTool to run directly in administrative mode without asking for administrator password.

RunAsTool is a portable app so you can easily keep it in a pen drive and run it on any computer within a Windows Active Directory Domain. It’s a life saver if you want to give network users administrator access to specific programs instead of giving them local admin privileges.

Conclusion

All the methods given above can be used for different purposes. As a power user or a system administrator, you must be aware of all these methods and can use them according to your situation. For a quick application, I use the keyboard shortcut + mouse click method. For domain users, I keep a copy of RunAsTool on a network drive and distribute it to users who want administrative access to specific programs.

After the May 2018 update to Windows 10, most of the users who use Remote Desktop function are facing an issue where they get the following error while logging in to a remote computer via RDP.

An authentication error has occurred.
The function requested is not supported

Remove computer: [computername]
This could be due to CredSSP encryption oracle remediation.
For more information, see https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=866660

Authentication Error Function Requested Is Not Supported
Authentication Error Function Requested Is Not Supported

This is due to a recent vulnerability fixed in Windows 10 and Windows 7. After installing the latest update KB4103727 for Windows 10 Version 1709 and KB4103718 for Windows 7, you will start getting this error.

4 solutions to Authentication Error Function Requested Is Not Supported

Let’s go through some resolutions to this problem.

Solution 1: Install updates on the target computer

The first and the most recommended solution to this issue is to update the target computer on which you are trying to connect remotely. Go to Windows Update and check for updates. Install all the updates specifically related to CVE-2018-0886.

Specifically, if the target computer is running Windows Server 2016, you should install KB4103723 and if you are using Windows Server 2012 R2, then you should install KB4103725.

A server reboot will be required after installing these updates.

If you do not want to update the computer or it’s not in your access then you can try the other solutions listed below.

Solution 2: Using Group Policy

  1. Go to Run –> gpedit.msc to open Group Policy Editor.
  2. Go to the following policy path:
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Credentials Delegation

    Credentials Delegation group policy
    Credentials Delegation group policy
  3. From the right-hand pane, open Encryption Oracle Remediation.
  4. Select Enabled and set the protection level to Vulnerable.
    Encryption Oracle Remediation policy
    Encryption Oracle Remediation policy
  5. Go to command prompt and run the following command:
    gpupdate /force

This will apply the group policy immediately and you will be able to use Remote Desktop without restarting the computer.

Solution 3: Using Registry Editor

The same thing can be achieved through Windows Registry. Here are the steps:

  1. Go to Run –> regedit to open Registry Editor.
  2. Go to the following key:
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\CredSSP\Parameters
  3. In the right-hand pane, edit the DWORD value of AllowEncryptionOracle key to 2.
  4. If you can’t find the key, you will need to create it. Otherwise, you can download the following registry file, double-click to run it and it will automatically create the key and set it for you.

CredSSP Parameters Registry (364 bytes, 41 hits)

Solution 4: Uninstall updates from your computer

Another workaround is to uninstall the updates from your computer. If you are using Windows 10 Version 1709, you should uninstall the update KB4103727 and KB4103718 if you’re running Windows 7. Uninstalling these updates requires the computer to be restarted.

Final words

Although you can use any of the above mentioned methods to resolve this issue of RDP Authentication Error Function Requested Is Not Supported but I recommend that you should either use Solution 1 or Solution 2 for the resolution. What are your thoughts about this?

The latest version of Skype 8.21 for Windows, Mac and Linux is available for download and installation from Microsoft. Get the latest Skype 8.21 offline installer direct download links in this article. The latest version sports a visually colorful design. With the new release, Skype 7.4 or Skype classic development will be ceased by Microsoft. Skype 8.xx is the future way to go for regular users.
Skype 8

Looking for an offline installer for Skype 8.21? Find the latest download links below. While you can get the Skype Classic and switch to the older version of Skype, it is recommended that you should be running Skype 8.21 at the least. Microsoft recommends Skype 12 to be used in Windows. It does not come as Windows Desktop setup. Skype 12 comes pre-installed in Windows 10 but not everyone is comfortable using the Windows app as compared to the Desktop app. That’s why users prefer Skype 8 Desktop app over Skype 12 Windows app.

Skype 8.21 features and advantages

Let’s discuss some advantages of Skype 8.21 as compared to Skype Classic

The earlier versions of Skype used to save chat history on the local computer. This meant that if Windows got corrupted, Skype history would be lost. This is not the case now. Skype 8.21 is cloud based and synchronizes chat history with Microsoft servers.

Another advantage of using Skype 8.21 or above is encryption. Like, WhatsApp, Skype also supports end to end encryption but you need to be running Skype 8.14 or higher.

While Microsoft will not offer any updates for Skype Classic and 7.41 is the last released version which will not be supported after some time. So Skype 8.xx or above is the way to go in future.

Interestingly, the change log page of Skype from Microsoft seems to be abandoned. Microsoft shows the latest release as Skype 7.41.

Checking version and updating Skype

Checking version in Skype 8.xx is different from the earlier release. Follow the steps below to check Skype version installed on your computer.

  1. Open Skype and sign-in with your Microsoft account
  2. Click on the display picture at the top left corner of Skype window
  3. Scroll down and select About

    Skype 8 21 0 9
    Skype 8.21.0.9

Opening the About dialog will automatically trigger Skype to check for latest version. It will automatically start downloading if a new version is available. Alternatively, you can follow our blog to get the latest information when new versions of Skype are released.

Firefox 60 stable has been released and is available for download and installation. We will share Firefox 60 offline installers in this article but first we’ll see what changes have been made to the new browser.

Firefox 60 downloading
Firefox 60 downloading

From Firefox 57, Mozilla is calling its browser Firefox Quantum and is working on performance improvement to compete with Google Chrome. The latest version of Firefox seems to come with a lot of improvements which we will discuss below.

What’s new in Firefox 60

If you are from the US, Firefox 60 will show sponsored content on every new tab you open. The content will be sponsored from Pocket. Not all the US users will get these sponsored stories but still it is annoying and a privacy concern. Here’s how to disable sponsored stories after upgrading to Firefox 60.

How to disable sponsored stories in Firefox 60?

  1. Open new tab in Firefox 60
  2. Click on the gear icon on the top right corner of the tab.
  3. Uncheck Recommended by Pocket check box.

This will prevent Firefox from showing sponsored stories.

Group Policy Support

Firefox 60 comes with support for the enterprise. Now organizations can moderate Firefox browser across the network through Group Policy in case of Windows network and JSON in case of Mac and Linux. You can easily install the group policies template for Firefox and moderate Firefox across your organization.

How to install Firefox Group Policy templates in Windows 10

Here are the exact steps to install group policy templates for Firefox:

  1. Go to Mozilla GitHub and download Firefox Group Policy Templates.

    Download Firefox group policy templates
    Download Firefox group policy templates
  2. Extract the zip file and go to policy-templates-master\Windows folder
  3. Copy firefox.admx and mozilla.admx to C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions
  4. Go to en-us folder inside Windows folder
  5. Copy firefox.adml and mozilla.adml to C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions\en-us
  6. Open Group Policy Editor by going to Run –> gpedit.msc
  7. You will find Firefox group policies under Administrative Tools\Mozilla in both Computer Configuration and User Configuration.

Firefox group policy templates in gpedit
Firefox group policy templates in gpedit

Same-site cookies security feature

Same-site cookies feature has been introduced in Firefox 60. It is a good step towards a more secure browser as it prevents attacks like cross-site request forgeries (CSRF).

Basically, the sites we open in a web browser place cookies in the browser cache for keeping information like a user is logged in or not etc. Unfortunately, the browser can not differentiate if the request is from a genuine website or a fraudulent source.

Same-site cookies enables the developers to tell the browser that cookies should only be accepted if they originate from a specific source.

There are many other security vulnerabilities which have been fixed in Firefox 60. You may go through the list of fixed vulnerabilities in Firefox 60 here.

New CSS engine for Firefox 60 for Android

Mozilla has also released Firefox 60 for Android and has introduced a CSS rendering engine called Stylo. Stylo was originally introduced in Firefox 57 for Desktop last year.

Firefox 60 for Android is releasing through Google Play store and you may get an update soon if you have already installed Firefox in your Android device. Otherwise, we will give Android download link in this article (in the download section).

Privacy related improvements

Firefox 60 improves its camera privacy indicators. This will disable the camera and its light automatically when video recording is disabled. It will also enable the camera and light automatically when you enable video recording.

Other changes

  • Improvements to new tab including responsive layout.
  • HTML5 improvements
  • Developer support improvements
  • SSL Certificates issues by Symantec before June 2016 are no longer in Firefox as well as Google Chrome.
  • Reader View opens with F9 keyboard shortcut.
  • Support for Occitan (oc) locale.
  • Skia graphics library updated to 66.
  • Support for web authentication API has been added allowing the users to authenticate from USB tokens (YubiKey etc.)

Difference between Firefox 60, Firefox 52 ESR and Firefox 60 ESR

Firefox 60 is mainly for home users as well as enterprises which are not bind with the functionality of Firefox. Firefox 60 ESR means Extended Support Release. ESR is mainly for enterprises and organizations who are not ready to implement new technologies released in the latest version of Firefox. The major difference starts from Firefox 53 and the gap widens from Firefox 57.

Firefox 60 and Firefox 60 ESR are very similar in features but a few features have been disabled in the ESR release to make it compatible for organizations which depend upon older technologies.

A few difference among Firefox 60, Firefox 60 ESR and Firefox 52 ESR are as follows:

  1. Push notifications are disable in Firefox 60 by default.
  2. You can disable add-on signatures in ESR version while Firefox 60 makes it mandatory to enable the signatures.
  3. Support for older Operating Systems like Windows XP and Windows Vista are only supported by Firefox 52 ESR.
  4. Microsoft Silverlight is only supported until Firefox 52 ESR.
  5. WebAssembly was disabled in Firefox 52 while it is enabled by default in Firefox 60 ESR.
